Curriculum Vitae
I was born in Vercelli on June 18, 1960, where I live today.
Both my grandpa and my dad were medical doctors in Vercelli,
graduate at Turin University respectivly on 1912 and on 1951.
Both exerted the medical art as Family Doctors in my town.
During academic year 1978/79 I get the Undergraduate Diploma
of “Maturità Classica”at Liceo Ginnasio Lagrangia in Vercelli
with 43/60 as final evaluation. Studying mainly classic literature
in latin and greek as well’s italian literature, less space was for mathematics
, physic and science, that I’ve studied largely by myself.
During academic year 1979/80 I begin the first year of courses for the
Doctoral Degree in Medicine and Surgery at Turin University and I
meet the professors for lessons and seminars at S. Andrea Hospital in Vercelli.
However I begin my first contacts with Turin academic life
'cause all exams, orally and writing sessions, as well's practical seminars,
were done at Turin University.
On academic year 1983/84, it was time to have a more direct
involvement with academic life of Turin University Departments, in
order to choose a good thesis topic and evaluate possible choices for my
postdoc studies.
That’s why, during the firth year of Doctoral Degree in Medicine, I begin
my Internist period at the Institute of Internal Medicine in Turin, on the
Department of Clinical Medicine B at Institute of Internal Medicine,
directed by one of first italian endocrinologists, the Professor Gian
Michele Molinatti. During academic year 1984/85 I get
my Doctoral Degree in Medicine and Surgery at Turin University
on July 9, 1985 with the doctoral thesis on
“Photonics double ray Absorptiometry: a new bone metabolism evaluation”
with Prof. Gian Michele Molinatti,
reaching the final evaluation of 108/110 and my doctoral thesis was printed.
On February 3, 1986 I done the exams in order to exert the profession of
Medical Doctor at Turin University, exams passed with final vote of 97/110.
Post doc curriculum vitae
My thesis was printed and it was time for Post-Doc studies. I loved
endocrinology, bone metabolism, and internal medicine topics.
During academic year 1987/88 I get the Specialization on Andrology at
Turin University with the Thesis on “Testosterone effects on bone and on
phosphocalcium metabolism on hypogonadal males”on June 28, 1988
and 70/70 cum laudae.
From 1986 until 1994 I was regular member of Italian Society of Mineral Metabolism.
From 1988 I’m regular member of Italian Endocrine Society.
From 1998 I‘m regular member of American Association for the Advancement of Science.
From 2001 I’m regular member of International Bone Mineral Society.
From 2005 I’m regular member of American Society for Bone and Mineral Research.
From 2006 I'm regular member of Endocrine Society.
Scientific Works
On 1984 I was assigned by professor GianMichele Molinatti to
endocrinology group of Professor Gian Carlo Isaia, working at first
diagnostic approaches to metabolic bone diseases, using a mineralometer
with a gadolinium source for bone scan and Bone Mineral Content evaluation.
Some of Isaia GC scientific publications, reported also my name as Author.
I remember some of these first works on bone densitometry field:
Isaia GC, Gastaldi M, Guidetti D et al. Reproducibility of lumbar BMC
valued with the technique of the double photonic ray.
Mineral Metabolism Research in Italy 1984;5:69-72.

diagnostic approach. Min Endocrinol 1985;10:51-6.

postmenopausal women. Maturitas 1989;11:287-94.

effects on bone mineral density. J Endocrinol Invest (Suppl.2) 1991;14:220.
This intense period of studies, during my post-doc life, was a three years long
period of both experimental research and studies programs, finally approaching
to a friendly use of scientific literature. That’s was possible also
thanks to intensive contacts and suggestions with other italian as
well’s international groups working on bone and endocrinology fields:
Professor Filogamo at Turin University in Italy
Professor Caniggia at Siena University in Italy
Professor Gennari at Siena University in Italy
Professor De Bernard at Trieste University in Italy
Professor Bonucci E at Roma University in Italy
Professor Smith R at Oxford University in United Kingdom
Professor Meunier at Lyon University, France.
Professor PJ Delmas at Lyon University, France.
Professor H. Fleish in Switzerland.
Professor C. Christiansen in Denmark.
Professor Franchimont in Belgium
Professor Riggs BL at Mayo Clinic in Boston, Massachussett, USA.
Professor Reddi AH at National Institute of Health, Bethesda,Maryland, USA
(now at Davies University in California).
Professor Eanes at National Institute of Health, Bethesda, Maryland, USA.
Professor Rodan G in USA
Professor Manolagas S at Washington University at S. Louis USA
(now at Texas University in Arkansas, USA)
Professor Avioli L at Washington University at S Louis in USA.
The intensive studies experience was possible to efforts of Endocrinolgy
group of Professor Gian Michele Molinatti and to my family
economic helps. Otherwise it was not possible, in a so
shorth time, of three years travels outside and inside Italy for
International Congresses and Scientific Seminars.
The best of those was done in May 1989 at Erice (TP, Sicily) at Centro
Ettore Majorana, where I meet and exchange my impressions with the
best scientific leaders working for CENTRO NAZIONALE DELLE
RICERCHE, Itay and for NATIONAL INSTITUTE OF HEALTH, United
States of America, under the organization helps of
NATO ADVANCED STUDY INSTITUTE.
Time and life changes cannot cancel the experience done knowing and
talking with such men. Men before than Professor of Science, those
personality and love in life profoundly influenced and marked
my future life decisions and life view. Some of them are yet died, but they
were able to left a profound mark with their great personality and
scientific knowledge, besides any scientific publications, to all people
living and talking with them.
From 1986 I've worked as Family Doctor in Vercelli until today at
Azienda Sanitaria Locale VC, Distretto di Vercelli.
Your Sincerely
Giovanni Salamano MD
